Maternity photos capture a short and special season, and timing matters. Book too early and the bump barely shows; too late and you may be uncomfortable, or the baby may decide to arrive first.
The best time: 28 to 34 weeks
For most pregnancies, the sweet spot is between 28 and 34 weeks. The bump is round and clearly visible, and most people still have the energy to stand, change outfits and move between poses. If you are expecting twins or your doctor expects an early delivery, aim for the earlier end, around 26 to 30 weeks.
Book early
Reserve your date in your second trimester, then confirm the exact day as you get closer. That way you get the time slot you want and are not searching for a photographer at 33 weeks.
Studio or outdoors?
Studio sessions give you full control over light, temperature and privacy, which matters if you want flowing gowns or more intimate images. Outdoor sessions give a natural, airy feel; parks and wooded trails around Dover work beautifully in spring and fall. Read our guide to the best photo spots in Dover for ideas.
What to wear
- Fitted dresses and gowns that show the shape of the bump.
- Flowing fabrics such as chiffon and tulle for a dramatic look.
- A simple fitted top and jeans for a relaxed, everyday option.
- Solid colours or soft patterns; avoid big logos.
- Partners in coordinating neutral colours, so the focus stays on you.
Include your partner and children
Some of the most meaningful maternity photos include the people waiting to meet the baby. Plan a portion of the session for your partner and any older children, and bring a small snack and a favourite toy for little ones.
Make it comfortable
- Wear comfortable shoes between shots.
- Bring water and a snack.
- Schedule the session for the time of day you usually feel best.
- Ask for breaks whenever you need them. A good session is never rushed.
Many families also book a newborn session for after the baby arrives, so both sets of photos match. See our maternity sessions in Delaware, including what is included and the price.
